Just like my recent post, Best Naperville Restaurants For Date Night, there are A LOT of family/kid friendly restaurants in and around Naperville. Some of which make both lists!

Going to a restaurant with a toddler is always a toss up. Whenever we take our daughter out to eat, she could be a complete angel the entire time or the total opposite, leading us to wish we’d never left the house. I’m not ashamed to say we’ve changed our order from eat-in to to-go on more than one occasion.

But as she’s gotten older, it’s gotten easier, and I think taking her out to eat regularly helps. Each time is a learning experience, whether it goes well or not.

In order to take our toddler to a restaurant (aside from dessert places), the restaurant MUST have a kids menu. If a restaurant has a kid’s menu, then I know the waitstaff is tolerant of kids and so are the patrons (usually).

Plus, a kids menu typically comes with crayons and a coloring page, and of course – food that is appetizing, appropriately portioned, and appropriately priced for what my 3-year-old will eat.

In this blog post, I list my favorite kid friendly restaurants in the Naperville area, followed by TIPS to consider when restaurant dining with a toddler.

Tips for Restaurant Dining with a Toddler.

  1. Bring snacks: This may seem odd seeing as you’re at a restaurant, but you don’t want to be stuck with a hangry toddler waiting for their meal to arrive. Small snacks curb their hunger and keep them happy while you wait.
  2. Bring toys: We always bring a tablet or let Mia watch videos on my phone, along with toys like puzzles, cars, trains – anything small that can be played on a tabletop. Mia really likes these puzzles from Amazon.
  3. Don’t be afraid to get up and walk around: This is easier to do in the warmer months than in the winter. If Mia doesn’t want to stay seated the entire time, we’ll take turns walking around with her outside.
  4. Don’t experiment with food choices: Eating out at a restaurant is not the time to make bold food choices for your toddler. Get them what you know they like, even if it’s the same Kraft Mac and cheese they eat all the time.

Key Takeaways

Going out to eat with a toddler can be a great time if you choose the right place and prepare accordingly. However, you can do everything right and still wind up wishing you never went out in the first place. That’s just how life goes with a toddler. Don’t set your expectations too high! And don’t be afraid to try again if it doesn’t go well.

This list has touched on a variety of kid friendly restaurants, but there are still a lot more out there to be explored in the Naperville area! We are always eager to try new restaurants as a family and will continue to expand this list as we do so.

Does your family have a favorite restaurant? Tell me what it is in the comments below!
